Spring fashion is cooler and quirkier than ever, so who better to front the NYLON March style issue than Katy Perry, the pop tart with a twist. Besides being a talented singer and songwriter, she's educated, thoughtful, and creates her scandals through lyrics, not tabloid covers.
Executive editor Stephanie Trong sat down with Ms. Perry in Los Angeles last month. Below, some highlights.
On her changing fashion aesthetic:
"Some of the kid shit I've grown out of completely... I'm taking it out of the Shirley Temple, Betty Boop, Lichtenstein kind of thing. It's still fun, but a bit darker. It's not as annoying. Sometimes, I feel like a big strawberry with a face on it."
On her changing music:
"Sometimes I really feel like I'm more of a Taylor Swift... Love has really affected my songwriting. I know how to handle a man now."
About I Kissed a Girl:
"It was never meant to be a Girls Gone Wild song. It was meant to be fun, sweet, cute, kind of tongue in cheek... but now I'm comfortable with saying, 'Actually, I've been with a woman.'"
The Best Quote Ever, From Katy's Mom:
"She's like, 'Yeah, I dated Jimi Hendrix for a hot second.''
